Call for Volunteers
We Need You!
GED Tutors
Volunteers to serve as GED tutors for weekly, one-on-one lessons at a convenient location such as the MLK library downtown (near Metro Center and Gallery Place/Chinatown metro stations), assisting older youth who need help with math, reading, writing and social studies. Tutors will be provided with an orientation and binder with tutoring strategies, plus the full assistance of an experienced GED instructor.
ESL Conversation Partners
Volunteer as a conversation partner for adults who are learning English. Tutors can meet at Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church (at Tenley Circle) to assist learners by having conversations and teaching learners about American customs while enhancing their English comprehension. Conversation partners can use books from a small ESL library located at Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church to help teach or enhance conversation.
After-school Program Aids
Marie Reed Elementary School (Adams Morgan): Volunteers are needed to help run a Science Club for fourth graders. This is a great opportunity for people with a special interest in science and math to teach kids using hands-on projects. This is an after-school program that runs from 4:00-5:30 pm, Mondays and Tuesdays.- Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church (Tenley Circle): Volunteers are needed to tutor middle school students and assist them with homework. We also need volunteers to plan special lessons in various areas of study or share hobbies and interests with students. This is an after-school program that runs from 3:30-6:00 pm, Monday - Thursday.
- Drew Elementary School (NE DC): Volunteers are needed to help run a Science Club for fourth graders. This is a great opportunity for people with a special interest in science and math to teach kids using hands-on projects. This is an after-school program that runs from 4:00-5:30pm, two days per week.
- Other Locations (SE/NE DC): Volunteers are needed to help with weekend field trips, community service projects, and open gym nights. Field trips and community service projects are generally a half day, two Saturdays per month. Open gym (at the Merrick Center in SE DC) is Tuesdays and Fridays, 6-8 pm, and features basketball, open computer lab, and recreation for children and youth ages 5-18.
