Caterpillar Co-op Preschool
The Caterpillar Co-op is a parent cooperative preschool that provides an affordable option to families, with highly-qualified teachers, a play based curriculum, small class size, and full immersion in a foreign language for preschool-aged children, the only language immersion program of its kind in the DC Metro area. More than a school, the Co-op is a community, with each family sharing in the business operation of the Co-op, thus making it truly a cooperative venture.
Co-op News
For the 2007/2008 school year, the Caterpillar Co-op has a Spanish immersion program with three classes (one each for 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds) and a French immersion program with one class (for 3-year-olds). There is also a "lunch bunch" option available to each child in the 3-year-old and 4-year-old classes.
It started out with six children as a "mom's morning out" program of the Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church. Due to the shortage of preschool slots in NW DC and lack of language programs for preschoolers, the Co-op grew to several families who hired a trained instructor to provide a quality early childhood education. As a co-operative, the member families manage the Co-op, paying monthly tuition to cover teachers' salaries and other school expenses, working a set number of hours per month in the classroom, and sitting on a Co-op committee. The Caterpillar Co-op is particularly dedicated to its Tenleytown community. During the admission process every year special consideration is given to applicants from the immediate neighborhood.
The Caterpillar Co-op is located at Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church, 3920 Alton Place, DC 20016, approximately 1.5 blocks from the Tenleytown-AU stop on Metro's Red Line.
