National Baptist Memorial Summer Day Camp
Our day camp provides a place for children to learn and grow, offering academic enrichment; varied activities like recreation, crafts, and music; field trips; guest speakers/programs; community service; an emphasis on values and character-development; and daily meals for 7 weeks and 9 hours each day in summer.
Children are given experiences that stimulate curiosity and learning, plus practical steps to build self-esteem and lessen negative behavior by helping children identify and internalize values that help develop character, integrity, and responsibility. Through the involvement of dedicated, local volunteers as well as Urban HANDS groups, children make real progress in both academic and life skills.

Our Columbia Heights program site at National Baptist Memorial Church (NBMC) is located in the most diverse Ward of our city, with a large Latino population and many foreign-born children. Here the poverty rate is 26% (35% for children). 5 of the 8 schools located near NMBC were identified in 2005-2006 as "In Need of Improvement or Corrective Action." Because of summer learning loss, which equates to over two months of school for children in poverty, academic remediation and providing hands-on, in-depth expeditionary learning activities were the greatest need. Secondarily, low-income, working parents in the neighborhood are often unable to find quality, affordable care for their children during the summer.
