ESL Instruction branches out with new classes
City Gate ventured into a new chapter of English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction by starting classes at the Embassy of Myanmar. At the request of the ambassador, two levels of ESL instruction began April 20 for those working in the Embassy needing practical, day-to-day help with English conversations, reading, shopping, traveling and urban living. For the next six weeks, classes will meet twice a week in the evenings to assist, coach and teach more than 20 students to increase their confidence in using and understanding English.
The invitation to hold classes came through the Rev. Cecil Mahendranath, a Southern Baptist missionary in DC working with embassy personnel. It marks the first time a faith-based organization has had direct involvement with the embassy. City Gate hopes this new initiative will provide a foundation for continued efforts to reach out and allow the Spirit of God to advance a message of love for all people in a nation that currently is dealing with many struggles.
Lucas Shivers and Kendi Tremmel teach the upper intermediate class, while Marilyn Norris and Tiffany Shao work with the beginning students. Language and communication hinge on English comprehension for the Myanmar citizens living and working in DC. Classes also include several other nationalities of students' friends and co-workers. Families learn together, with children at the table completing exercise with their parents. Using workbooks and additional handouts, students learn with a varied style of games, partner work, drills, vocabulary, reading and questioning.
