2006 Souper Bowl of Caring
Souper Bowl Acheives Big Win!
Johenning Team Beats Hunger!
In the big game, a cast of stellar players (DCBC churches) from metro Washington, joined by top draft picks from across the country (Urban Hand churches) came together as partners of the Johenning Baptist Community Center to shut out hunger.
These churches asked worship attendees to drop a dollar in soup pots when leaving church on Super Bowl Sunday to help support City Gate's feeding program for children at the Center. Nearly 20 churches responded raising almost $6,000.
The game was never in doubt after Most Valuable Player Brookland Union, one of the first congregations to turn in a check, scored an early $900 touchdown. Urban Hands player First Baptist from Fairfield, IA, clinched the victory with a record-setting field goal of $597 that traveled over a thousand miles to split the Johenning doorposts and land right in the kitchen.
In addition to Brookland Union, our DCBC partners so far have included Montgomery Hills, Wheaton, Washington First Baptist, Takoma Park, University, Forest Heights, Rivers of Joy, Briggs, Front Royal, Trinity, Riverside, Clifton Park, Dayspring, and Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church. Churches from North Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, and Iowa rounded out a 'souper' roster.
Last year City Gate served nearly 10,000 meals to children at the Johenning Center, who are the big winners from this year's Souper Bowl. Because of partnerships with the National Capital Area Food Bank (to serve a hot supper every week day) and with the State Education Agency's summer feeding program, it only costs an average of one dollar to provide a child with a meal.
City Gate Executive Director Lynn Bergfalk expressed appreciation for a "wonderful response from our churches that enables us to continue a practical, much-needed ministry."
Almost all the children attending the Johenning Center qualify for free or reduced price school lunches. National statistics show that only 1 in 5 children receiving subsidized lunches are able to access a summer feeding program, so the provision of three meals every day during the summer-long Johenning Day Camp meets a tremendous need.
