Field Trip to see the movie Freedom Writers on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Monday, January 15, 2007, City Gate after-school participants attended the movie Freedom Writers. This activity was followed on Tuesday, during the after-school program, with a special discussion and writing session about the movie.
City Gate Kids Compose Their Own I Have a Dream Speeches
All children and youth in our after-school program were asked to write and read their own "I Have a Dream" speech, in memory of Dr. Marin Luther King, Jr. Asked to relate what they see when picturing a better world, they came up with some amazing responses. We at City Gate wanted to share them with you, and have printed some of them below.
I Have a Dream...
I have a dream that I will live longer and stay out of violence.

I have a dream that they didn't make guns. And the whole world was a moon bounce.

I have a dream that people will be happy and glad that Dr. King was good to us and was a good man. He changed the law.

I have a dream that the school system would be better. Like the books, desks, bathrooms and lots more stuff. I think it would help if the government get together and raise more money to get the things fixed!

I have a dream that people would stop fighting. Why fight because somebody said you was ugly, that's stupid. I think the kids will learn better if they had books and was not disrespectful. Kids should be in after-school programs so that they would not be on the street. I have a dream to live and see 2008 cause a lot of children did not get to see 2007 so I guess I am lucky. If we did not freedom and we were slaves, some of these kids would have whips on their backs. I think that the teacher's should make learning fun so that kids would want to go to class and learn more. I think if more kids was in sports that they would have no problem getting them off the streets too. I have a dream about lot's of stuff but this is the most important one's.

I have a dream that one day there will be a serious lack of violence. There will be no more homeless people on the street. You can go out of your house anytime of night without being shot at or killed.

I have a dream that one day that the world would be like heaven. And that no one would get killed unless God wants them to. I have a dream that one day no one on this world would be racist or mean to one another. And everybody will just be friends. And the world could just be peaceful. And no one would think they are better than anybody.

I have a dream that all people will get along and it will be peaceful and calm. Everybody will do good in school and the schools will be more clean. The schools will have good books and lockers. Recess after lunch and the bathroom will be cleaned everyday. No kids will be saying bad words no more. We will stay in school and know one will steal from people and someone home. Everyone will come and be safe. Raise more money to get more schools fixed and open for kids.
