Help the Homeless Walkathon
November 17, 2007

Saturday, November 17, 2007 kids from both NW and SE DC after-school program buddied up with volunteer from Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church to talk in the Fannie Mae Help the Homeless Walkathon. The weather was clear and not too cold — perfect for a 5k walk around the tidal basin. Our kids especially enjoyed the live music, singing, and dancing of various street performers along the way.
About the Walk
Every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, thousands of people from the Washington Metropolitan area gather for a 5-K walk around the National Mall to Help the Homeless. It is an exciting, colorful event with the walkers making their way around the Capitol and various monuments and memorials on the Mall — and it makes a tremendous difference by raising several million dollars for the most vulnerable and needy members of our community.
100% of the funds we raise will go to the Downtown Cluster of Congregations Homeless Outreach Services. The Cluster provides a variety of services to the homeless, including social workers who are directly available to those on the streets, helping with food, shelter, counseling (including substance abuse problems), finding employment, and transitional and permanent housing to help people off the streets and back into the community.
