Sunday, February 4th, thousands of churches across the country will encourage worshippers to give one dollar when leaving Sunday services on Super Bowl Sunday in what is probably the simplest project ever to be designed! Many churches simply have their youth hold soup pots or baskets at the doors after church. All the money collected is sent directly to a charity selected by each participating church. Either the charity or the church phones or emails the total received to Souper Bowl headquarters, so a national total can be announced. That's it! No meetings, no paperwork, no bureaucracy.

Programs Director, Kristin Wiener Programs Director, Kristin Wiener presents a "Nerf" football, signed by the kids in City Gate's after-school program, to Rev. Dr. C. J. Malloy Jr., as thanks for Brookland Union Baptist Church's participation in Souper Bowl of Caring 2006.

We would like to ask your church to participate this year, and send the proceeds for the hunger ministry at City Gate. Each year we feed approximately 10,000 meals to neighborhood children – a hot supper every day after-school, and three meals-a-day for the over 100 kids attending summer day camp. Most of the children we serve qualify for free school lunches, and we know from personal knowledge that we putting meals in front of kids who otherwise may not get enough, or would lack proper nutrition.

Because we do the supper meal in partnership with the food back, and summer breakfast and lunch in partnership with the State Education Agency, it only costs us about $1 per meal to feed these children. Who wouldn't drop a dollar in a basket on Super Bowl Sunday if they knew it represented a complete, nutritious meal for a hungry child?

City Gate also provides a food pantry year-round for families, sends a weekly food bag from the Capitol Area Food Bank home with each child in our after-school program, and this November provided over 80 families in the community with a Thanksgiving food basket.

If you or your church would like to participate, please contact us in early in January. We will send you a packet of SOUPER BOWL materials (bulletin announcements, a children's sermon, simple instructions, etc) to facilitate participation in the national hunger project. We hope you will participate – and that you'll send your Souper Bowl collection to us at City Gate! (Regardless of which team comes off the field as champion, all our kids will be winners because of your caring about them.)
