Thanks for a Successful and Fun Family Event: Columbus Holiday Fun Day and Winter Clothing Give-Away
Monday, October 9 at the Johenning Baptist Community Center, City Gate and Memorial Baptist Church of Arlington, VA hosted a Columbus Holiday Fun Day and Winter Clothing Give-Away. Festivities will start at 10 am with indoor and outdoor games provided by the youth of Memorial Baptist Church. Lunch was served at noon, followed by a special and prayer session. Meanwhile, we gave away fall and winter clothes from our clothing closet. We had men's, women's, children's, and infant clothes available, and many people from the community stopped by to get some. At the end of the day, youth from Memorial Baptist partnered with the kids in our program for a time of prayer. Thank to all who made this event great!

Farewell and Best Wishes to Meredith Young
City Gate bids sad farewell to our operations manager, Ms. Meredith Young. Most of you know Meredith as through her work at the Johenning Baptist Community Center or through her coordination of Urban Hands mission groups. Her letter to staff, friends, and clients of City Gate is as follows:
"Dear Friends, As some of you already know, today is my last day with City Gate. I have accepted a new position as Associate Manager for SmithBucklin, an association management company in D.C. This decision was not easy, and was made only after much thought and prayer. The closing of one chapter, and the beginning of another. It is bittersweet. City Gate has been more than just a job for me these past 3 years - it has been my heart and soul. The children we serve and the people I've worked with over the years have touched my life in a way that nothing else ever will.
This transition is made easier only because I have accepted an invitation to serve on City Gate's Board of Directors. So you haven't seen the last of me yet!"

Notices
Starting Wednesday, October , we will be having a special evening class - "Knit or Crochet Your Own Scarf!". We will be meeting every Wednesday, from 6 - 7 pm in the upstairs classroom of the Johenning Center. This class is for all ages, and is open to all members of the community. We especially encourage mothers, daughters, and grandmothers to attend together. All supplies are provided free of charge and there is no fee for the class!
Make sure you are registered to vote! The deadline for voter registration to vote in the General Election is October 10. Even though the Sept. 12 Primary has passed, this is an important opportunity to show current and incoming elected officials the issues that are important to you. In order to register, go to dcboee.org for voter qualifications, instructions, and forms. Or, call City Gate at the Johenning Center for further assistance.
