City Gate and First Baptist Church of Springfield will be hosting an Early Thanksgiving Dinner, this coming Saturday, November 11th from 12 - 2 pm. Turkey with all the traditional sides will be served. First Baptist will also be providing a movie and other activities for children, so bring the whole family! Later this Month, in City Gate After-School Programs...
First, on Thursday, October 9, our new Thrusday Math Tutoring Program will start. This will be individualized one-on-one tutoring by experienced, volunteer tutors every Thursday afternoon, from 4 - 5 pm, starting November 9, 2006. Children who participate in this program will greatly benefit from the extra academic help, but will be expected to follow strict rules concerning their attitude and behavior. There is no cost to this program, but in order for your child to participate, you must agree to follow and sign the contract below. If you prefer to have your child not take part, they may participate with the other after-school activities. If you have any questions about the program or the contract below call Kristin at 202-561-5113. Please sign-up by Thursday, November 9!
Next, on Friday, November 17 we will be having a special after-school program on homelessness. Parents and guardians are invited to attend and learn more about this important issue. This will be followed by a lock-in, starting at 9pm Friday night until 8 am Saturday morning, in preparation for the Fannie Mae "Help the Homeless" Walk-a-thon. Only children previously registered in the after-school program and who have a signed permission slip will be allowed to attend the lock-in. We are also in need of parent chaperones for this event, please contact us if you are interested in helping out. Remember - a lock-in means that no one leaves or arrives between the times listed: 9 pm to 8 am!
Finally, on Saturday November 18th, City Gate is a partner in the Fannie Mae "Help the Homeless" Walk-a-thon. We are in need of parent chaperones, and other family and friends are welcome to come along as long as they arrive at the Johenning Center by 7:30 am. The bus should arrive back at the Johenning Center between 11 am - noon. The Walk-a-thon will begin on the National Mall between 4th and 7th Streets, N.W. The pre-Walkathon activities and entertainment will begin on the main stage at approximately 8:30 a.m. The Walkathon begins promptly at 9 a.m. Free water and light refreshments will be handed out to walkers after the Walkathon. The route is approximately 5K (or 3.1 miles) and will take from 40 to 60 minutes to walk. The Walkathon route is relatively flat; strollers and wagons are welcome, and the route is handicapped accessible.
